Ministry: No reason for panic buying

The ministry and the Estonian Traders Association have sent guidelines and materials to all retail enterprises for additional informing of customers to contain the spread of the virus and preserve people’s health. 

Kristi Talving, deputy secretary general for the internal market at the ministry, said that there are sufficient stocks of goods in stores and there is no reason for panic buying.

“I have been in active communication with business operators and although they are having a difficult time, there are enough goods in stock and deliveries of goods have not stopped,” Talving said.

The materials sent to retail enterprises are meant in the first place for informing clients via store radio, posters, stickers and information materials both using e-channels as well as in stores. The recommendations have been played to customers on many store radios already. 

“In order to stop the spread of the virus, we advise customers to go to a store for a specific purpose. Stocking up on exceptional amounts of basic necessities and food for many weeks in advance is not necessary,” Nele Peil, CEO of the Estonian Traders Association, said.

“Traders now have various guidelines from the state for ensuring the safety of employees and customers, and we very much hope also for supporting measures in the future,” Peil added.

Visiting a store when ill should be avoided.

“Don't be worried, there’s enough goods for everyone. Disinfect or wash your hands before and after visiting a store. Think about shopping in advance so that the visit to the store was short. Keep a distance of at least one meter with other visitors and employees of the store. Go to a store alone, don’t take children with you,” the recommendations say.
