Three multifunctional bomb disposal vans previously used by the Estonian Rescue Board will soon be sent to Ukraine as humanitarian aid.

The vans, which are to be handed over to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, will reinforce the humanitarian mine clearance in Ukraine. The vehicles have passed a technical inspection in Estonia and are ready to be used immediately in Ukraine. The three vans have a total market value of 12,200 euros and the cost of sending them to Ukraine will be covered by the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The director general of the Rescue Board, Kuno Tammearu, is scheduled to meet with heads of the State Emergency Service in Kiev on Wednesday to hand over the humanitarian aid and give an overview of the activity of the Rescue Board.

Tammearu said that humanitarian aid played a very important role in building up the Estonian Rescue Board after the country regained its independence.

"In the 1990s, when the Rescue Board began its activities, it was mainly supported by humanitarian aid from Finland and Sweden, but since 2000 we have used the EU's structural funds to purchase equipment. Like we were helped earlier, we now have the opportunity and the obligation to help other countries," he said.
